Rekindle Anderson

We start promptly at 6pm Anderson time 🙂 Have your butt in a seat and ready to listen to the Presentations. You will be deciding who receives the proceeds of the night. Upon arriving at the event you will present your EventBrite Ticket, each person checking in will receive 1 voting ticket.

20×20 = 20 Slides x 20 Seconds per Slide = 6m40s
Each pitch will be 6minutes and 40 seconds with 20 slides that will each display for 20 seconds. The next pitcher has 30 seconds to get on the stage and start their pitch. This will move fast as removed as much fluff in the night as possible. It is the pitchers night and your money, decision and vote.

The Audience Selected Best Pitch
At the conclusion of the night you will place your vote using the ticket you received when you checked in… Cash or checks you put in with your vote will go directly to the group you want. Cash and Checks will be used to break any ties. Once the votes are counted the Vesuvius Team will announce the “Audience Selected Best Pitch” and they will be receive the proceeds of the night (sponsorships, ticket sales, cash in their bucket) minus the cost of putting on the event (insurance, space/equipment rental, etc.)

A final check will be delivered shortly after the event when all monies clear and “Audience Selected Best Pitch” is ready to accept .

No Strings
Make no mistake as a paying ticket holder you will be making a direct emotional and monetary impact on the success of a project. Your involvement and effort does not end there. If you pick the wrong team; then, they skip town with the monies or put in a new hot-tub instead with the money… that is on you :-(. If they are wildly successful; then they make a major change in the community for the better that is also on you 🙂

VIP After-Party
If this sound exclusive… it is 🙂
After the “Audience Selected Best Pitch” is announced, they will then tell everyone where the after party is at and the cost to attend. Those dollars will go directly to the “Audience Selected Best Pitch” also.
*VIP ticket holders are given access with their ticket purchase.

The End is Just the Beginning
It is on all of us community members and supporters to promote, support and be there for these pitchers. They each have made a commitment to this community, whether or not the are the “Audience Selected Best Pitch”; they all have something amazing that deserves our attention. After the event, reach out, tell others and insure that everyone on the stage receives your support and gains the attention they deserve.

The Background:
In late 2020 a quick phone call between two community members led to putting action behind a common question asked amongst many circles. “How can we cut through the politics and popularize/propel the amazing people in Anderson?” “What if we gathered amazing people, enabled them, measured their actions and opened up their projects to the community to directly fund and propel?” We also wondered “how could we do this without getting in the way of those already doing amazing work and drawing upon an equitable cross-section of the community?”

That led to a Facebook Poll where we asked what are the priority topics of problems in Anderson. We received many topics and votes on those topics. All were amazingly insightful, genuine and the impact of tackling these topics would be far reaching.

Later we held a series of open video calls, gathered a strategy, reworked that strategy, and reworked it again to what you will see today. We have spoken to and presented the Rekindle Anderson Initiative to international researchers and many United Nations Sustainable Development Group(s).

The Resources:
Steering Team: Anikka Richardson King & Jean Poole
Facilitators: Kellie Kelly, Carrie Bale, Myra King

The Event:
10 Team 6m40s each to WOW the CROWD
The Audience will determine the Best Pitch of the Night and who receives the proceeds.

How to get involved RIGHT NOW:

Are you thinking “I need more detail?”:
Ultimately what the public will see is many amazing people doing amazing things that have a social impact in the community. Ticket sales and sponsorships will be rolled in to one check that will go to the group with the most votes from YOU the ticket holder. This is your event and these are your community members.

-When you enter the event, each ticket holder will be given an exclusive ‘voting ticket’
-Each group will get 6 minutes 40 seconds on stage, each will have 20 slides that will automatically progress every 20 seconds
-After the last presenter, voting will start, where ticket holders will select their favorite pitch
-Cash, checks or other commitments will be given directly to your designated group and will be used in the event of a tie
-After the announcement of the ‘Audience Selected Best Pitch’ an afterparty will take place hosted by that group with an entry fee they will announce from stage

Vesuvius 2020 Startup and Business Census

In 2016, a small group of entrepreneurs, creatives
and innovators from the greater Madison County region gathered in a local tap room in search of community, support and answers to common questions. In short order, this loosely organized group was galvanized to become Vesuvius Coworking Inc. (VCi). Today VCi is widely regarded as the authentic voice of the region’s Entrepreneur and Innovator community.

VCi exists to advance the interests of our regional innovation ecosystem. Facilitating high-level conversations, enabling cross-sector collaboration, and hosting strategic gatherings, the VCi team works tirelessly for the benefit of our community. Favoring genuine relationships over networking, we bring leaders together to drive positive change and move our region forward.

In the early years, VCi worked diligently to create opportunities for our region’s fledgling innovation ecosystem to coalesce. Flagship event series such as StartUp MeetUp, an every other week collaborative event, allowed small curated groups of entrepreneurs and industry experts to build relationships while learning from one another. Over 500 Unique Entrepreneurs and Innovators have attended one of more meetups.

In 2018, VCi started Vesuvius Coworking Pitch Night (VCPN), the region’s largest innovation Idea Generation Event attracting over 750 attendees and 20 presentations. The VCPN keynote by Elevate Ventures COO, was the first Major Venture Capital Firms Official Visit to Madison County in many years. The State of Indiana Economic Development team were the first to financially and logistically support VCPN. As a Result of VCPN’s over 80 Applications have been recieved by local Innovators and Entrepreneurs. They were reviewed by 11 Highly Successful Entrepreneurs from around the country. Aerial Fit2Fly, Farm Society and Madison County Pickleball have been enabled by the dollars raised and were selected by the Audience to receive over 80% of the monies raised with no strings.

In the past three years the greater Madison County region’s innovation ecosystem has developed immensely. There are now more resources, events, and opportunities for entrepreneurs to connect than ever before. With that in mind, VCi has set out to better understand the dynamics of our community and use that under-standing to help guide critical policy and investment decisions, maximize impact, and increase the competitiveness of our region.

Why Now?

The VCi Startup Census is being created in response to a need for a more granular, localized understanding of our region’s innovation ecosystem. In the last decade the greater Madison County region, and Anderson in particular, has experienced a surge of entrepreneurial activity. Many different factors have influenced this momentum, some better understood than others, but where are we now? And where do we go from here?

How will the policy decisions and investments we make today affect the long term viability and competitive position of our region in the future? These are incredibly difficult questions to answer. Without a clear understanding of what drives this part of our local economy, choosing the best path forward becomes almost impossible. VCi does not pretend to be capable of making these difficult decisions, but we can help those who do.

The VCi Census provides the missing context that decision makers need to chart a path with confidence. The hyper-local focus of the Census allows unique insights and relevant data to surface that would otherwise go unnoticed. By repeating the Census each year, long term trends will emerge in the data that not only help guide us going forward, but measure past progress as well.

2020 marks the first of what will become the annual VCi Census. Over the course of several months, hundreds of local companies will be asked to add to tens of thousands of data points. Our data science team will use the database to generate visualizations and identify possible correlations for analysis which will be presented in the first annual “Vesuvius Coworking Inc. Census Report”, released in April 2020.

In 2020, VCi will complete this process with the goal of more than 100 Companies and dramatically expanding currently hidden data. All data will be anonymized and displayed in a way that protects the privacy of Census participants and the proprietary information of participating companies.

The data collection, analysis and report will be completed to the highest scientific standard the project’s resources allow. Best efforts have been made to eliminate bias and confounding variables wherever possible. It is important to note, however, that the information to be presented in this report does not represent a comprehensive assessment of every company in the region nor will the results necessarily represent the views of our partners.

The Survey will become Available before January 1st 2020. For many businesses this will be your first chance to have your data speak to the community and raise the profile of your contribution to the region. Please make sure Vesuvius has your email address to keep you in the loop.

Vesuvius to help create Open Franchises in 2020.

Here’s the First One!

We are just now formalizing the process for selection of the first of many new businesses anyone can own with the help of the Vesuvius Team. Sign up for our email list and check back on this post. Updates will be coming In December!

ppQ.What does that even mean?

A. By completing this form you are solidifying your place in line to become a founding member of Vesuvius. The first 25 will be invited to all VIP events and provided unique insights on the progress of Vesuvius. You will also have the strongest voice on the decisions and direction Vesuvius takes as we build Vesuvius specifically to exceed your expectations. Only those first 25 members will be considered Founding Members.

Q. Is Vesuvius Coworking just for Entrepreneurs?
A. Although the cultural drivers of coworking are decidedly entrepreneurial individuals; the diversity of industries, motivators and background of coworkers are astounding. Take it from concrete data from this MatchBox Studios in Lafayette Indiana video (20 seconds in) they reveal the makeup of their space in just the first two years of operation. If you work one or more days from home, a coffee shop or other similar space you are a candidate for the increased productivity (40% increase according to Harvard Business Review) experienced by coworking members.

The Boulder Thesis

It has been a great journey working with everyone to create a Coworking Space and witnessing the first stages of building a startup community in Madison County. Over the past year I have met many goals and shared many a sobering moment with many of you.

In Early 2016 I was approached by 2 public/private partnerships to help create a startup community and locate my businesses in other cities. I had just returned to Indiana after visiting many communities around the South-East and Midwest. Each time I visited a community I heard the same issues repeated by Mayors and Economic Development teams in all those cities except those who embraced the ‘Boulder Thesis’ of building, maintaining and fostering a Startup Community.

The Boulder Thesis as outlined by Brad Feld in his book “Startup Communities: Building an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in Your City” states these qualities:

  1. Entrepreneurs must lead the startup community.
  2. The leaders must have a long term commitment.
  3. The startup community must be inclusive of anyone who wants to participate.
  4. The startup community must have continual activities that engage the entire entrepreneurial stack.

I spent Most of 2015 and 2016 visiting communities who were on the many lists of ‘Best Small Communities for Young Professionals’ and ‘Best Small Cities to Start a Business’. Communities like La Cross Wisconsin, Richmond Virginia, Chattanooga Tennessee, Wilmington North Carolina and many others.

From the left: La Crosse Wisconsin, Richmond Virginia, Chattanooga Tennessee, Wilmington North Carolina

I mention these specific cities because they share many similar historical aspects to Anderson Indiana.

1. Nearly all underwent a significant downturn following the loss of major manufacturing jobs. Many of these cities Downtowns and residential areas were economically depressed just 3-5 years earlier.

2. Each was within a 1-2 hour drive from a community of significant size that recently went through its own transformation.

3. Third, every single city identified their way out and found a system they replicated nearly identical to ‘The Boulder Thesis’.

Mayors and Economic Development Directors in each community spoke of a similar epiphany moment when they looked at their cities past. They all realized that attracting the next large employer was not the only step to recovery. They looked at their history and rediscovered how their cities were built and prospered previously. Each noted they started by attracting entrepreneurs and young professionals and fostering their success. This is not a new concept or to be dismissed as ‘trendy’ (empirical evidence abounds).

The success of a few entreprenuers… created more jobs, connected that company tighter within the community and created lasting connections to the city. Text, Call or Email me today let’s meet tomorrow!
